Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father left her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young child. Ford began acting during her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that this was not the best venue for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy and humour, which she added to her set in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
